Yucatan Fishing Excursions

on board the

“Poco Loco”

Enjoy a day of sport fishing on the beautiful Gulf of Mexico on board the “Poco Loco.”  This beautiful 28 foot Power Cat is powered by two 200hp Mercury optimax engines, the “Poco Loco” is fast, stable, comfortable and safe. With more than 30+ years experience Captian Peachy knows the waters and delivers fish every time. Wether you enjoy trolling  or bottom fishing we can put on fish. We supply all the gear rods, reels and bait all you need to do is bring them to the boat!  We are docked at “La Ria” (see on home page) so when we return “La Ria” will cook your catch to perfection.

We specialize in two and three day trips to distant locations such as Cayo Arenas (82 nautical miles} and Areicefe Alacranes (62 nautical miles), both of which offer truly spectacular fishing. The choice of locations depends on where your taste runs. Cayo Arenas offers a desolate location with a high probability of seeing no other fisherman. The remoteness of the location means that Arenas is not over fished and will likely result in some very big fish being caught. Alacranes, on the other hand, is a national park. Permission is required to visit the park and a fee is charged depending on the activities that one wishes to engage in while there. During the summer there are usually quite a few people at Alacranes. The sheer beauty of the park and its vast expanse offsets these negatives. One would be hard pressed to find a prettier place in Mexico to visit.

                     Cayo Arenas

The Cayo Arenas complex comprises three emergent reef structures that create a horseshoe-like formation, open on the northern side. The eastern side contains the largest reef with an extensive, shallow lagoon environment; its western face contains two small, unvegetated cays (just visible as whitish specks in the above image). The southern rim of the Cayo Arenas complex is for the most part submerged, with a small emergent reef located at its eastern end. It is home to a single, unvegetated cay and like the cays of the eastern reef is composed from coral rubble and sand. Here in the lagoon you will find bonefish, tarpon, and barracuda. Bottom fishing off of this Cayo yields gigantic red snapper and shark as well as grouper. For those who prefer to troll, there are mahi mahi, tuna, marlin, and sailfish. There is a manned lighthouse on the Cay, but it is otherwise uninhabited and rarely visited. There are 2 abandoned houses on the Cay, which offer overnight shelter.

Arrecife Alacránes is a large, emergent, shallow-water platform reef. Oval-shaped in outline, the reef measures 27 km in length and is up to 15 km across. Major structural features include the long arcuate reef on the eastern (windward) side (at top in the above image) and the poorly developed series of largely submerged reefs on the western face. The protected interior lagoon contains a profusion of reticulate reef formations, patch reefs and coralline ridges; in the northwest the lagoon contains more open regions.

The western (leeward) rim contains five vegetated cays: Isla Chica, Isla Desterrada, Isla Desertora, Isla Pérez, and Isla Pájaros; there are also areas of shifting sand bank that may become alternatively exposed and removed with wind and wave action as well as being modified by storm activity. The islands are all low-lying and vegetated, rising to no more than 4 m above sea level.

The islands of Arrecife Alacránes are regionally important seabird nesting sites as well providing stopover to species migrating across the Gulf of Mexico. Nesting species include Masked Booby, Red-footed Booby, Brown Booby, Laughing Gull, Brown Noddy, Magnificent Frigatebird, Royal Tern, Sandwich Tern and Sooty Tern. Aricefe Alacranes is a great spot for diving, snorkeling or fishing. There are numerous protected bays and lagoons that are loaded with record-breaking bonefish and tarpon. Lobster and conch are there for the taking either through snorkeling or diving. As with Cayo Arenas, the fishing is spectacular at Alacranes. In this case, the bottom fishing is likely to include oversized grouper as well as red snapper. Like Cayo Arenas, those who prefer trolling will find mahi mahi, tuna, sailfish, and marlin readily available. We have a special arrangement for palapa shelters on the island so that we can string hammocks and grill lobster and fish for dinner.
