Puerto Progreso is located on the Gulf of Mexico, only about 25 minutes from Merida, the capital of the State of Yucatan.  Puerto Progreso is blessed with super white sandy beaches and  a malecon (boardwalk 14 blocks long) with hotels, bars, and restaurants along its entire length.  It has a population of about 45,000.  Citizens and visitors alike enjoy the relaxed and quiet atmosphere and the many restaurants along the malecon,  Many are members of the ring.  
Progreso has all the services of a large city—banks, ATMs, grocery stores, laundries , even 24-hour pharmacies and a hospital with emergency service. The best kept secret in Progreso!!

          La Ria

Located on the river to Yucalpeten is La Ria, a quaint, quiet, romantic, peaceful tiki  bar with the best FREE botanas ever. Buy a beer, get something to eat; buy another beer, get something else to eat, and so it goes all day long!  Fried fish, ceviches, refried beans, beets, tostados, fish soup, shrimp, etc.

Nestled in the mangroves are three or four little tiki huts or (palapas) as they are called here, with a bar and small restaurant.  The setting is wonderful, and the service is great.  A nice place to pass the day!

Hotel Yakunah


If you want to stay at one of the best hotels in Progreso , Hotel Yakunah is the place!  This wonderful little hotel has a true Mexican flavor and is beautifully decorated and landscaped.  Superbly operated and owned by Gerben and Elke Hartskeerl  they will make your stay one you will long remember.

Fully equipped with pool, bar and restaurant all rooms have  air-conditioning, cable tv and private baths and continental breakfast is included.  Prices range from $65 USD to $120 USD for a two-bedroom, two-bath garden apartment.

Buddy’s Seafood  & Steakhouse Restaurant & Bar


Buddy’s has long been the local hangout for expats from the USA and Canada, as well as the snowbirds here for the winter, who often wait to talk with the cruisers in hopes of maybe meeting someone from near their hometown.  Located near the beginning of the Malecon and close to the pier, Buddy’s fills up with cruisers every time the cruise ships make port in Progreso.

They feature a well-stocked bar and a large menu, with items from seafood to steaks, fajitas to french fries.  With a relaxed and friendly atmosphere, it’s easy to see why everyone loves Buddy’s.  Can’t find it—just ask anybody!  Buddy’s also offers nightly specials during the winter months!
